It took me becoming a small business owner to truly understand the importance of supporting small and local businesses, especially during the holiday season. It is tempting and oh-so-convenient to place an order with one of big retailers. But I urge you this holiday season to consider the alternatives, dig a little deeper, go the extra step -- and support small businesses. There are so many amazing products out there that will certainly make great gifts for anyone -- and everyone -- on your holiday shopping list.
When shopping for gifts for girls, we’ve pulled together some items that complement our Makoshey mission well: gifts that encourage girls to be themselves and to explore diverse interests.
For girls who are interested in STEM, we love the Green Explorers Club project boxes. Each box highlights a different theme related to the life sciences and environment, and includes materials for hands-on activities, instruction booklet, and a related picture book. We are thrilled to partner with Green Explorers Club on the Jane Goodall Project Box, which includes an add-on Makoshey Jane Goodall t-shirt. A perfect gift for girls who love animals and nature!
Also, for growing STEMinists, check out Yellow Scope’s Foundation Chemistry: Beakers and Bubbles kit. These kits, designed for curious and creative girls ages 8-12, contain dozens of fun experiments involving chemical reactions, molecular motion, and temperature.
For girls who love sports, we typically would recommend giving the gift of a sports experience -- but since going to watch athletes live in action isn’t an option right now, we can read about them instead. Here are our top 5 favorite females in sports books:
Pair any of these books with one of our Makoshey sports shirts, and a pair of Notes to Self Positive Affirmation socks.
They come in toddler, kid, and adults sizes -- and we wear these socks constantly. They are comfortable for active wear, or lounging around, and offer the perfect dose of inspiration throughout your day.
For girls who love history, there are so many books and publications out there that can help teach and inspire them. We absolutely love Bravery Magazine, a quarterly print publication that features a brave woman in each issue.
The creators of Bravery Magazine believe that introducing kids to strong, brave role models will empower them to be strong and brave too -- and we couldn’t agree more. Each issue is full of educational content, DIYs, and illustrated biographies. Of course, many of the women we feature in our Heroic Women shirt collection can be found in Bravery mag -- Frida Kahlo, Mae Jemison, Jane Goodall, Amelia Earhart (and it sounds like Ella Fitzgerald is coming soon!)
For girls who love art, we highly recommend any one of the Hopscotch Girls coloring books. We also love the “I’m Me” Sketchbook, which encourages girls to explore their strength, creativity, and individuality through their own unique works of art.
For girls who love the outdoors, check out the House of Shan LWYL wide-mouth water bottle. Great for use in the backyard or on the trail, girls can stay hydrated and feel good -- a portion of every bottle goes to funding projects focused on clean water.
Another fun option from Hopscotch Girls is their Outdoor Sports Sticker Book, which contains 24 pages and over 150 stickers. Perfect for the little adventurer, each page provides girls a way to bravely and confidently explore the beauty and excitement of nature and the outdoors.
