Wear Your Character Series: Averie & Ashlyn

November 10, 2020

For our November Wear Your Character feature, we are delighted for you to get to know sisters Averie and Ashlyn. We’ve totally fallen in love with this sweet family and their inspiring story of strength, kindness, and resiliency. Averie is a goofy, spunky, chatty 5-year old that radiates joy. You’d have no idea from her smile and spirit that she was diagnosed with Leukemia at 2-years old. She’s so lucky to have nurturing, kind, and confidence-building big sister Ashlyn at her side. The sisters’ bond has strengthened over the years, and we’re honored to get to know both of them, and their amazing mom Stacy, in our interviews.

Tell me about your girls’ personalities and sibling relationship.
Stacy: Since day one, Ashlyn has been an old soul. She feels every emotion deeply, wears her heart on her sleeve, and empathizes with everyone she meets. Averie, on the other hand, is our goofy, spunky redhead. She’s a chatty ball of energy that radiates joy. The girls were always great playmates, but their bond definitely strengthened after Averie was diagnosed with Leukemia at just two years old. Ashlyn took on the nurturing big sister role with pride, and never once made Averie feel self-conscious about being different. Averie just adores Ashlyn, and I really credit Ashlyn for helping to give Averie a lot of the confidence she has today.

How are you raising strong girls?
I think it’s important to teach our kids that strength comes in many forms. One day, being strong may mean being “tough” in a certain situation, but another day, being strong may mean allowing yourself to open up and have an honest conversation when you’re feeling scared or anxious. I certainly hope I’m doing a good job modeling that for my girls, and I also work hard to nurture and celebrate the strength I innately see within each of them. At the end of the day, I just want both girls to be confident and proud of who they are.

How do you see them being strong (Averie) and being kind (Ashlyn)?
I realized when Averie rang the end-of-treatment bell in September that she had spent nearly half of her life battling cancer. What’s amazing to me is that you would have no idea what she’s been through based on her smile and spirit. Her positivity was unwavering throughout treatment, and she refused to let cancer keep her from being a kid. She truly finds the best in every situation, and in doing so, has inspired me to do the same.

Ashlyn was born kind, but in just 8 short years, she’s also developed a really philanthropic spirit. She joined me this summer in spreading joy to others through interactive chalk art, has loved assisting me in my pediatric cancer fundraising efforts, and is in a program at school where she can help earn meals for those in need by reading books. But above all, I’m just proud of the kind sister, daughter, and friend she is. Her kind heart is truly something special.
