Meet Rosie, who loves to share joy with other people!
Rosie is this month’s Wear Your Character hero debuting our new Courageous t-shirt.
When Alopecia took her hair four years ago, Rosie found that making other people smile boosted her confidence and made her feel happy. She started Coming Up Rosies to help other kids restore confidence, happiness and pride during their medical journeys. The non-profit donates Smile Kits, containing paints, brushes, and canvases, so that kids can paint and customize their very own head scarves, neck scarves and superhero capes. Rosie also wrote her own book with her mom, “My Hair Went on Vacation” which just came out!!
Her courage, wisdom and compassion shine through in our interview below.
Name: Rosie
Age: 9
Favorite hobbies, activities, and/or sports: softball, swimming and piano
Who’s your hero?
Ruth Bader Ginsburg
If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and why?
I'd want to teleport, so I can go anywhere in the world without paying for a plane ticket (even though my parents pay the tickets).
What inspired you to do what you do?
Ever since I was little my job was to make someone smile every day. Even when I was sad about being bald, I would still try to make one person smile each day. When I lost my hair my parents gave me a head scarf, and when I put it on my smile returned. I felt such joy and confidence, I wanted to share my feelings with all of the other bald kids who looked like me. Four years later, here we are, we're making so many smiles it's hard to count.
What do you hope other kids can learn from your experience?
Always wear a smile on your face, even though you might not be smiling on the inside. I hope I can inspire other kids to love themselves the way they are and to be self confident. Also, kids can have good ideas and start charities, the sky's the limit.
What advice do you have for other kids looking to get involved in the community or in charity?
First you need to find something you are passionate about, and do your research. There is a charity for everyone, dog, people, veterans, kids with Alopecia and cancer, you name it.
